Bohemia Blog by Agent Erin Whitney
At Bohemia Realty, we love helping people find the home of their dreams, but that’s not the only thing we do to help people in our community. We also take a significant amount of time out of our personal lives to volunteer and give back to the community we’ve grown to know and love. We’d like to highlight a few of the organizations and charities that we’ve worked with, and let you know how you can get involved as well!
Bideawee is working to lead the NYC area in taking care of homeless cats and dogs to place them in homes where they can be cared for. They help provide shelter and nourishment to these animals while working to help them find a long-term sustainable home. You can support Bideawee by being an animal care volunteer or as part of a pet therapy team. They also host events you can volunteer at as well. And of course, if you’re in the market for a new furry friend, you can check out the pets available!
The Harlem Park To Park is a non-profit organization that works to promote the area’s culture and economic development by supporting over 200 local businesses. Their 200+ partner businesses and organizations encompass everything from restaurants, to museums, to floral shops. They don’t offer many standard volunteer opportunities, but you can support them by going to one of the local events they sponsor like the Shop Harlem Live Harlem Artisanal Fair or the Harlem Restaurant and Retail Week they hold every year.
Another organization we’ve worked with in the past is the Mayor’s Alliance For NYC’s Animals, which works to save the lives of NYC’s animals by working with shelters and rescue groups. Their mission is “no dogs or cats of reasonable health and temperament will be killed merely because they do not have homes.” You can get involved volunteering for NYC’s animals by finding a shelter or rescue to work at.
The Harlem Children’s Zone is an organization dedicated to giving kids the individual attention and support they need to become successful independent adults. They work to achieve this mission by working with kids of all ages - from early childhood all the way through college. Their programs span across three main categories of health, education, and family & community through which they can provide support all throughout childhood and into early adulthood. To get involved with Harlem Children’s Zone, they obviously accept monetary donations, but they also accept donations of tickets to shows and other cultural exposures to the arts, internship opportunities, workshop hosting, and much more!
(Bonus) Host your own Fundraiser!
If you want to make an impact in your local community, but none of these ideas sound exciting to you, then consider hosting your own fundraiser! By hosting your own fundraiser event, you get to decide which organization or cause you want the proceeds from your event to go to. And with all the different kinds of fundraiser event planning tools out there, it’s easy to send invites, market your event, track RSVPs, and give everyone a resource to find more info about the event. You could do a charity golf tournament, sponsor a saturday pancake breakfast, or even find a even find a local band to play a small concert.
We’re happy to be able to be able to support our local community, and we hope you’ll join us in supporting these wonderful organizations that help preserve our social and economic culture!
