After January 1, 2013 I discovered I am gluten intolerant, in medical terms it is called Celiac disease. What does that mean? Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that damages the villi of the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food....
Let me translate that, In other words if I eat Wheat, Rye, or Barley flour I feel like there is a war zone going on inside my body. Must never eat that type of flour ever again :(
Oh yeah it’s in almost everything everywhere! Even Mountain Dew, distilled vinegar, and soy sauce.
Living in Harlem, I then think to myself where can I eat? Fried Chicken and Pizza has clearly taken over the fast food market uptown. If you order from most restaurants the only gluten free food usually is a Salad. Gets real old after a while.
Back in January I went to one my favorite restaurants in NYC for a friends birthday, Dinosaur BBQ on 125th ST. My friend is also gluten free. She hands me a three page gluten free menu! There is hope in Harlem!!
Since then I have noticed more and more restaurants and bars are carrying gluten free items and beer. Rumor has it the famous Sylvia’s may soon have a gluten free option of chicken and waffles!
Lolita’s on St. Nick is a Great mom and pop mexican restaurant, they use mostly corn flour and offer corn tortilla’s.
The craft beer bar, Bier International on Fredrick Douglass, offers cider on tap and gluten free beer in a bottle.
Harlem Tavern is a beer garden on 116th and carries about 5 ciders and one gluten free beer.
Cafe Pick & Eat on 177th has several options from sandwiches to pizza.
And many more restaurants carry these options!
So, to all of my fellow Gluten Free friends living or moving to Harlem, Don’t stress about ordering out or going out. Harlem is gluten free friendly.
