I chose to move to New York City because as practical as I am, I do believe in dreams and magic.  But once I got here, I put my head down and became consumed with the struggle. Then I had this EXPERIENCE!

My friends from London were in town and had tickets to see some artist that I had never heard of perform at The Apollo! I was kind of embarrassed that I had never been to THE APOLLO since the Bohemia office is only 10 minutes (New York walking) away.

Backstory: As a child I stayed up late past everyone’s bedtime to watch Showtime at the Apollo.  Amateur Night at The Apollo and the not-so-constructive criticism from the audience, yeah I dug it at 11 years old. I also knew of the deep history that the Apollo has, artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Jackson 5 and the list of greats that have performed here. It must be a magical place, and indeed it is!

On June 17th at 253 West 125th Street I got to watch Sam Smith’s dream come true. Two years ago, the 22 year-old Brit was cleaning toilets at the Vauxhall Tavern, a bar in London. Now he is headlining at The Apollo, singing to a SOLD OUT crowd.  I heard his voice for the first time, and what a voice! Everybody loved him and the atmosphere was electric.

The night could not have gotten any better and then during his last song of the night Mary J. Blige walks out on stage! I lost it! Magic! I saw Sam Smith’s Dream Come True at The Apollo. His debut album is #1 in the UK and #2 on the US Billboards and I saw his first performance at the Legendary Apollo Theater.

I was there at 253 West 125th Street on June 17th 2014.
