When I moved to New York almost 10 years ago from my hometown in New Orleans, I knew this city was expensive, but I was going to make it work. That meant moving to Brooklyn and having two roommates to still pay double the rent I was paying at home. However, I got over Brooklyn, roommates and most of all the train ride. I always wanted to live in Harlem ever since moving to the city and three years in I made that happen. After I found my perfect apartment I felt my social life was over. I was blowing most of my budget on rent, but the view, the location, the amenities where all worth it.
So, I’m sure you’ve moved here and feel the same way. On the contrary neighbors, pullout your iPhone or one of those Android things and download these apps: Groupon, Living Social, Amazon local, Yplan, Gilt City and Travel Zoo. These are all discount apps and websites for everything from shopping, dining, spa, pets, entertainment, you get the point.
People who follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter think I am so fabulous. Out to dinner every night, at some event or opening. If your anything like me you’ve turned your stove on just a little more then Carrie did on Sex in The City. I’ll tell you and only you my secret, well, and everyone I help find their perfect uptown pad. Look for a discount no matter what you are shopping for.
The great thing about using discount apps is you will be trying things you would have never even thought about. Last year I found out how much I love brunch and how many great brunch spots we have right here in Harlem. It was easy- I liked drinking, my vitamin D levels were low, and I always liked eating. Light bulb, have brunch and ask for a table outside! I went to Groupon, put brunch in the search, and found a long list of brunch spots around me. Best part is the only person who knows about your discount is your waiter, who you better tip on the original cost, keeping up your fabulous appearance. Without fabulous appearances I wouldn’t be able to monopolize the hashtag #harlemgent . The best part is most of the sites learn what you like and send you emails about deals you would like.
