When re-locating from Hamilton Heights 8 years ago I needed to find an apartment. I had visited a local diner called Land & Sea on West 230th & Broadway (still one of my late night go-to places) a few months prior and thought, “Hey! Why not explore that neighborhood? I could still be on the 1 train and stay close to the west side and be just 2 more stops north of Inwood at 215th street.”
So my hunt for a new pad began and saw a few places, which were all very spacious and affordable. I actually chose one 2 blocks from 231st & Broadway with an open view of the 1 train. I could hear the constant rumble from a distance, which I thought was a kind of cool added character to my new home.
What I really fell in love with was the feeling of a tight-knit community of working people and families, yet still super close to the hustle and bustle of the city. At the time I moved there, there were many small local-owned mom and pop shops. Nothing really too fancy back then, however, so much new development and change has taken place and I've seen tremendous growth.
Some of my local fave restaurants are:
Silhouette (5568 Broadway & 233rd): This place has innovative Latin American Tapas food with an upscale vibe. Make sure you dress to impress! They offer a very popular all day brunch party every Sunday with a rotation of the hottest DJ's in the Tri-State area.
Bronx BBQ Pitt & Gatstropub (170 West 233rd): If you are a beer lover they offer over 30 styles of Craft Beer and a great happy hour Mon-Fri 12 to 7- $5 dollar drinks all day! You can also catch a sports game on the big screen depending what time of day you go.
Hola Espana (5586 Broadway): Terrific Paella, fabulous sangria, great people, fun atmosphere. Some nights they offer live music - It's a fabulous trip to the heart of Spain without the long flight. Enjoy the journey!
Loeser's Kosher Deli (214 W 231st St): While I don't really eat Pastrami sandwiches this place is famous for them and will give Katz Delicatessan down on East Houston St a run for their money. I do stop in for their fresh home made baked Knishes! This neighborhood staple has been in business for 55 years.
Some of my favorite shopping stores:
Lot 4 Less: Their slogan is "It's not just shopping, it's an addiction" They are right, because I might just be addicted to this store. You can find everything from apparel to electronics, health and beauty, housewares, linens, gourmet food and much much more! This week I scored a pair of denim skinny jeans from Nordstrom for $13! They fit amazingly!!
Aldi Supermarket: Move over Whole Foods, Trader Joe's & Fairway, there's a new sheriff in town! This supermarket offers quality groceries at a fraction of the price. While there are not many locations yet they are expanding and I'm so glad they recently built one up here! I'm a hop, skip and a jump away. Aldi offers gluten-free and organic food options at a much lower cost than it's competitors. Make sure you stock up if you take the trip! http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/01/aldis-new-organic-selection-may-give-whole-foods-a.html
Popcorn Pawz (204 West 231st): If you're a pet owner, this is the perfect place to shop for your fur babies! They only offer holistic dog & cat food and all types of pet products from treats and toys to clothing and carriers. They also sell the cutest collars!
Bikram Yoga Bronx: With all the stress in day-to-day life, I try my best to have a healthy balance and get some exercise in. I love this type of hot yoga because you really work up a sweat and helps release all the toxins from your body. I leave feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle whatever life brings me!
*Here is the schedule: http://bikramyogabronx.com/2016schedulerates.html Maybe I will see you there
Astral Fitness: If you feel like getting a Rocky Balboa style workout, this gym offers a great boxing facility and personal instructors to help perfect your left hook. Get your boxing gloves ready! This is truly a great full body workout.
Blink Fitness: This brand new gym is budget friendly at only $15 a month. Nice clean equipment and you can also purchase accessories to enhance your workout at the front desk. There is also a new Starbucks location right downstairs!
If you're more of an outdoorsie type of person head north to the last stop on the 1 train (or jog!) to the track at Van Cortland Park ~ Every time I go to this track it reminds me of one my favorite old movies "The Warriors" where this movie was filmed in the late 1970's.
So this a little bit about my lifestyle in the Boogie-down Bronx. Hope you enjoyed it!
