The summer season is upon us and Uptown is the place to grab a festive cocktail. Not many people know that some of the most well-crafted cocktails in Manhattan are here, above 96thstreet. I am lucky enough to live and work right near some of these establishments so I have created my top 5 list of spots for a good cocktail in Harlem, Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights (and I’ve sampled more than a few…)

1.)Mess Hall Harlem

Mess Hall HAS to go on the list. It’s got a great happy hour special (hot dog, a beer AND a shot!) and an extensive bourbon and whiskey menu, the staff is always so welcoming and it’s such a cool joint! Check it out!

Mess Hall, 2194 Frederick Douglass Blvd- Harlem

2.)The Honeywell

The Honeywell is one one of the coolest bars to open uptown. Stepping into the Honeywell brings you back into the 1970’s with beads hanging from the doorways and that wood paneling we all know and love. There is always such a welcoming feel here. The cocktails here are artfully made, and combine unique ingredients in very interesting ways. The Disco Infernois is one of my favorites, and it is quite literally prepared by igniting it with fire. It’s quite the spectacle!

The Honeywell, 3604 Broadway- Hamilton Heights

3.)Saggio

This is one of my favorite Happy Hour spots and a great place to chat with a friend, or maybe go on a date. It’s a very quiet spot to sip on a glass of wine and have one of their great cocktails (The Lemon Ice is my personal favorite) and nosh on an amazing Crostini.

Saggio, 829 West 181stStreet – Washington Heights

4.)ROKC

These cocktails are FANTASTIC. From drinks displayed in lightbulbs and conch shells to cocktails served in hollowed out bell peppers this cocktail menu is a work of ART. Simple flavors such as Lychee, Ginger, Grapefruit and more are presented in the most ingenious ways. Trick is getting here early for a spot at the bar, or dropping by later in the evening near close to avoid the huge crowds that tend to form here nightly. If you have to wait in line, it's well worth it.

ROKC, 3452 Broadway – Hamilton Heights

5.)Cantina

If you love a good summer margarita, Cantina is the place to go! There are two locations, one at 111th and Adam Clayton and the second at 127th and Lenox. They have a fantastic tequila selection and make the best margarita around town! I love the original on the rocks with salt, but every once in a while I’ll go for their blood orange margarita and switch it up! Great happy hour specials at both locations too!

Cantina, 1838 Adam Clayton Boulevard & 329 Lenox Avenue – Harlem

This is just a sampling of the amazing establishments we have uptown, I am looking forward to discovering some new favorites this summer!
