Interview with Samantha Weinstein
1. How many years have you lived in NYC?
I moved to Washington Heights in the summer of 2014 — but I was actually born in NYC and lived most of my life in the suburbs 30 minutes away!
2. How was looking for a survival job when you moved here?
Hard!! I got a job through a friend to be a hostess… the hours were long and money wasn’t great and I got yelled at if I didn’t show up in heels… it was not for me. I was fired after a few months and then started nannying– I love kids but I was constantly seeking coverage every time I had an audition or show.
3. How did you become interested in working in real estate in the city?
When I got my apartment, I used Bohemia Realty Group and my realtor had mentioned that a lot of actors worked there. So, it was always in the back of my mind. Then last Spring, I decided it was time for a more lucrative job, and I started taking real estate classes.
4. How long have you been working in the real estate business?
About a year!
5. How did you hear about your real estate job opportunities?
I knew I wanted to work at Bohemia– so I went on their website to find when their next hiring event was! *Editor’s Note- Join us for Bohemia Realty Group’s next real estate hiring event on August 9th, 2017 from 7-8:30PM. Check it out HERE!
6. What different types of training did you need?
You need to get your real estate license, which consists of taking a 75 hour course, and passing a school test and state test. After that, you can start working! Then at Bohemia, they have this amazing system where every new real estate agent gets set up with a senior agent who is their trainer. So you have someone who walks you through everything and is there to answer your questions 24/7!
7. Do you believe working in the real estate business is a reliable, flexible, enjoyable source of income, while pursuing a career in the arts?
Absolutely! In the beginning, you really must devote a lot of time to it to learn the ropes. But now I am making my own schedule around acting auditions, classes, etc. I left for two months to do a show and then came back and got right back to work! And the money is much, much better than nannying… and less messy.
8. Would you recommend working in the real estate business to new artists/actors in the city?
Definitely!! Real estate is not for everyone– but if you are self-motivated, organized, and personable then I highly recommend it! And I especially recommend working at Bohemia Realty Group. Most agents are involved in the arts in some way– In fact, Bohemia Realty Group was founded by Principal Broker and Licensed Real Estate Agent Sarah Saltzberg when she was raising money to bring “The 25th Annual…Spelling Bee” to Broadway!
9. Have any other comments or concerns you would like to share?
