Where did the term "Happy Hour" come from? It originated in the 1920ís when the sailors in the U.S. Navy were given that time to take a break and usually entertained themselves with boxing and wrestling matches along with some alcohol. That reserved and exciting time for the sailors was a happy time for them; therefore becoming the sailorís term: "Happy Hour!" Fast forward - after Prohibition ended and alcohol fully became legalized, the majority of the U.S. began drinking before dinner between 5 - 7 pm, and that allotted time for drinking forever became known as Happy Hour!
Nowadays, EVERYONE loves happy hour. Itís that part of the early evening/late afternoon where after a long, hard day of work we look at our watches and say to our friends: "Itís about that time!" "Happy Hour" basically applies within a bar atmosphere where at a certain time of the day (usually between 5 and 7 pm), there are discounted prices on alcohol and food; so you can afford to double the merriment and not feel as guilty.
Working in Harlem, Iíve noticed an array of great bars and restaurants available for us to choose from. Harlem is a great place to explore with its abundance in creativity, culture, and history. And so, with that in mind I narrowed down some of the best and most popular Happy Hour Spots in Harlem. This way, after a long and hard day of work you will know exactly where to B-line and wind down over some good drinks, food, and company. Cheers!
Happy Hour in Harlem:
They offer happy hour 7 days a week from 4 - 8 PM! Anyplace that offers a meal consisting of a hotdog of your choice, a shot, and a beer for a reasonable price definitely passes as a great happy hour spot. Very fun and laid back atmosphere with great music and hotdogs!!! Maybe one of my favorite spots!
Cantina Taqueria and Tequila Bar
Great cheap margaritas and tacos? Yes, please! This is a very cute and quaint spot with great drink and food specials. They have multiple flavors for your margaritas and keep them strong with 100% agave! Youíre welcome and be careful!
Probably some of the best burgers offered in Harlem. Great wings...and tots. Really good tots! Great drink specials and a very large selection of beers. You really canít go wrong here, especially if youíre hungry. A must try!
67 Orange Street
Great ambiance, great munchies, and great specialty drinks! They also have handcrafted cocktails and small bites for sharing. This place is a little more fancier and a bit more pricier than some of the others, but definitely a must try if youíre looking for something unique and different.
Angel of Harlem
They have happy hour all night on Wednesday and Thursday nights and a very good DJ! Lots of food and cocktail choices during Happy Hour as well. Nice little spot to stop in and check out, but youíre going to need to get there before the dinner rush because itíll feel like youíre getting squeezed out. Caveat emptor!
