Ah, New York: A city so magical that the streets are practically overflowing with possibility…except in January.
It’s cold.
The holidays are over.
Cabin fever is at its peak and spring feels impossibly far away, because - let’s face it - this is New York and we probably won’t even get a real spring…
I need some inspiration to get me out of these winter doldrums!
Before I was an Uptown resident, inspiration would have meant a stroll through some shops and galleries in SoHo. But why look elsewhere when your own backyard is teaming with possibility? It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway) that Upper Manhattan, and Harlem in particular, have long been a home for artists of all mediums. While art galleries have been thriving here for years, there has recently been a noticeable influx of galleries relocating from other neighborhoods – I’m looking at you Chelsea, Greenwich, and the LES. Their loss is Upper Manhattan’s gain!

Here’s a small sampling of the many wonderful galleries offering inspiration this winter:

Essie Green Galleries – Since 1989, this Sugar Hill original features African-American master artists. Shifting Possibilities of Beauty will be on exhibition January 21st – February 25th.
